environment (we are such fools)

This environment series was inspired by running out of yarn. This process of not knowing if I will have enough and playing ‘yarn chicken’ reminds me of the games we play with the environment. We continue to keep using, exploiting, polluting, not knowing when we will run of time and what beauty and vibrancy we risk losing.

The two yarns in the first piece are named “birds of paradise” and “coral reef”. In this piece it is not obvious we are such fools and they represent the beauty we exist in. As we move through the second and third pieces it becomes more clear that we are fools and the vibrancy that has been lost. This work intentionally plays with visibility and is intended to be viewed from various angles as the same words repeat in each piece. Binaries are at the base of my work.

This game of yarn chicken I often play, and the time required to handknit leaves me trying to calculate what yarn I can get away with using and what happens if I run out. It feels like we are currently playing this game in so many ways and in multiple environments
