Using up my American yarn
Many, many years ago now, I took a chance, and bought some yarn from a company I didn't know, in Turkey, claiming to be the largest online retailer of yarn in the world.
This was so out of character for me. I couldn't see the yarn, couldn't feel the yarn, didn't know it's quality, if the color on my screen would match it in real life, had to trust it was real and spent way more in one transaction than I was comfortable with.
But from that decision, so much else flowed.
And from there I move into now.
Like for many others, threats of tariffs and so many things from across the border have left so many things up in the air. As I planned out new pieces, I found myself using up the American yarn I took a chance on so many years later, full of reused material and absolutely beautiful, and which I now, don't, see a time, I would buy again.
These pieces have, unintentionally, ended up being made with one Turkish yarn and one American. Many are made with hand dyed alpaca (a favorite from Turkey, which they aren't currently selling) and this cupro/ mulberry silk yarn from the states. Both of which will be gone with this series.
This moment, it feels like we are reaching the end of something. And I remind myself of Timothy Snyder saying don't lose before you lose. But where ever this all ends up, this is one more moment of change.
These projects, these words, come from my thoughts in this moment: how we got here, why we are, what is the goal humanity is trying to achieve, a little bit of righteous anger and all the other things that keep flowing through my mind.
